Julian Draxler has been linked to Arsenal since the day he was born it seems but he is a very good player. Before the Euros I wouldn’t have been too hot on the idea, I mean how many attacking midfields do Arsenal need? I mean we have Ozil, Ramsey and even Wilshere on loan, we have plenty of quality there.
But in the wings less so.
Walcott on form is an absolutely electric player and with his new found Joel Campbell-like (remember him?) work rate he looks perfect. On form he’s excellent, however off it…the less said the better. The Ox is someone who deserves to have place starting just on his talent alone but now especially on his performances. He had scored 7 goals and assists in all competitions this season and his determined and tricky play style is what Arsenal (and England) need right now is. Iwobi is young and very talented but right now proving better coming off the bench rather than starting at the moment. We have promising youth players like Reine-Adelaide, Maitland-Niles and Willock coming through but they aren’t quite ready for Prem level football at a starting level.
You see the problem here?
Draxler solves this dilemma. In the Euros I watched the 23 year old start for Germany as a left midfield and realised he played most of his football on the wings for Wolfsburg as well (unlike in his Schalke days). Draxler is a fast, technical gifted and creative player who (before Max Meyer nowadays) was Germany’s best talent. When playing for Germany with our own Mesut Ozil, Bayern stars Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng, and Madrid stalwart Toni Kroos he didn’t look out of place talent wise. The only troubling thing is his professionalism is seemingly not fully matured yet. The debacle involving him having an interview saying how much he wanted to leave Wolfsburg was a really stupid thing to do, we Gooners don’t need another Cesc Fabregas.
Draxler has been a long term target and a definite upgrade on what we have already. Bolstering our attack at this point in the season could be vital to us maintaining good form this season and in the future. To me this transfer should be a no brainer, as the simple fact is that if some of Draxler’s quality and age comes about for £25 million, you pay 35.
